Ordering pizza for a group goes wrong in two predictable ways: not enough pies, or too many of the same toppings for a group with mixed preferences. Both are avoidable with a bit of planning ahead of the order.

A rough sizing guide

A standard 14-inch pizza yields about eight slices. For adults eating pizza as a full meal, plan on three slices per person; for a pizza served alongside other food, two slices per person is usually enough. A group of twelve adults eating pizza as the main meal needs roughly five 14-inch pies.

Questions worth asking before ordering in bulk

  • Does the kitchen offer a bulk or catering discount above a certain order size?
  • Can pies be staggered — some arriving hot first, others 15 minutes later — so nothing sits and goes cold?
  • Is there a maximum number of pies the kitchen can prepare for a single time slot without a lead-time request?

Planning for dietary variety

For a mixed group, a reasonable split is roughly one plain cheese or margherita, one vegetarian, and the rest split between two or three popular meat combinations, with at least one gluten-free or vegan pie ordered separately if anyone in the group needs it — cross-contact from a shared oven can matter even for a whole separate pie.

Timing a large order

Large catering-style orders typically need at least two hours of lead time, and same-day orders above ten pies are often declined or pushed to the next available slot during peak dinner hours. Calling ahead a day early is the safest approach for any order above six or seven pies.
